TEXTILE ART

1000 Stitches

This piece strives to establish boundaries in the format of a Japanese-style curtain, offering protection of personal space as well as a banner of defiance. Traditional Asian-style stitching symbolizes courage, fortification and resilience – red knots in the shape of the international symbol prohibiting invasive actions ensures safety and refuge.

Reimagine

My hand-embellished Japanese happi coat is a tribute to the late art educator and community leader Bob Hanamura (1924 – 2020). He gifted me this vintage happi and I transformed it by incorporating world textiles, boro-style piecing and mending with traditional Japanese sashiko handstitching. Because his mission was to bring together a wide array of artists, traditions and cultures, I attempt to honor his many contributions to the arts, community-building and cultural unity.
